Since May 2024, smartphone users in Île de France can turn their iOS or Android devices into a digital version of the Navigo public transport pass. This allows them to avoid carrying a physical plastic card, though those who prefer it can still use the traditional badge. The feature also helps users recharge their passes without waiting in long lines at the start of each month. However, this method is not widely known among public transport users. To set it up, the pass must be placed on the back of the smartphone for the first time, a subscription must be selected, and the card must be placed on the back of the device a second time to activate it. This convenience is made possible by the NFC chip in most modern smartphones, which can mimic the behavior of a payment terminal. Recharging a Navigo pass using an iPhone or Android smartphone is relatively simple, provided the device is compatible with NFC technology. All iPhones from the iPhone 7 onwards support NFC, as do most Android devices released more than 10 years ago. Subscriptions for the following month become available as early as the 20th of the previous month. For example, users can purchase a November subscription starting on October 20th. Several apps allow users to recharge their Navigo pass, including IDF Mobilités (formerly Navigo Connect) and SNCF Connect. The IDF Mobilités app, which is the official app of the RATP (the public transport authority in Île de France), is recommended for its ease of use. The SNCF Connect app also allows recharging if users already have the Navigo pass and do not want to download another app. In IDF Mobilités, users should go to the "Purchase" section at the bottom of the app. In SNCF Connect, they should select the "Tickets" tab and choose the "Île de France" option. Users can then tap "On my Navigo pass" (or generate a virtual card directly on their smartphone), choose "Read my pass," and place their physical Navigo pass at the top of their smartphone so that it is detected by the NFC chip. It is advised to keep the pass in place for several seconds to ensure the detection works properly. After selecting the desired subscription (such as booklet, week, month, weekend, etc.), users can proceed with the payment using Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, or a bank card. The pass must then be placed again at the top of the smartphone to complete the purchase. It is important to note that users can only recharge the most recent Navigo passes, starting from the 2014 version (violet and silver) and its later blue evolution. There may be technical issues on the first of the month when many users attempt to recharge their cards simultaneously. Since May 2024, smartphones can also fully replace the physical Navigo pass, offering users a choice between digital and traditional options. Various subscription types are available, including single tickets, Liberté+, weekly, monthly, and annual passes.
