Infierno, the new novel by Carmen Mola, transports readers into a historical narrative set between Madrid and Cuba in the 19th century. Published by Actes Sud and available from October 7, 2026, the book follows the lives of two lovers, Leonor and Mauro, whose lives are disrupted by bloody riots and political violence. After the death of a soldier from Queen Isabel II's army, the two protagonists must flee prison, separated from each other. Leonor is forced into an arranged marriage in Cuba, while Mauro, having arrived secretly, becomes a "voluntary worker" on a plantation. Their fates change when a "devil" crosses the Atlantic aboard a mysterious ghost ship, triggering terrible punishments. Carmen Mola is the collective pseudonym of three authors: Jorge Díaz, Agustín Martínez, and Antonio Mercero. Their first novel, La Fiancée gitane, was published in 2019, followed by Le Réseau pourpre (2021) and L'Année du cochon (2024). In 2021, Carmen Mola won the Planeta Prize with La Bestia, published by Actes Sud in 2022. Infierno is described as a work that blends social, political, noir, and adventure elements, situated between Les Misérables and Apocalypse Now.
