Senator raises concerns over fuel stations

Senator Jean-Jacques Panunzi from Corsica-South expressed concerns about the precarious situation of independent fuel stations during a government session on Tuesday. He warned that the crisis could threaten over 400 jobs and impact the maintenance of the territorial network and competition on the island.

Government acknowledges the issue

The Government acknowledged the fuel situation in Corsica, noting its awareness of the unique challenges faced by the Corsican market. Minister Anne Le Hénanff mentioned that a temporary mission had been assigned to Paul-André Colombani, the representative of the 2nd constituency of Corsica-South, with a report expected by mid-November.

Immediate actions taken

Without waiting for the report, the Prime Minister instructed the prefect to contact the most vulnerable fuel stations to provide specific responses. A monitoring cell has been established by the prefect of Corsica to examine situations individually and to "mobilize the instruments allowing the liquidity of these companies to be supported."

Calls for targeted support

Jean-Jacques Panunzi urged the government to recognize independent island retailers as a profession particularly exposed to the energy crisis, on par with fishermen, farmers, or road transporters. This recognition would allow for a targeted program including a special fund, liquidity loans, deferrals of charges, and the prevention of payment defaults.

Government response and market changes

The Government did not announce a new program. TotalEnergies announced that starting November 1st, the benefit from the release of strategic reserves would be passed on at a level of about 10 cents per liter of diesel. Jean-Jacques Panunzi welcomed this but questioned its impact on Corsican independents.

Strategic reserves and expected impact

The Prime Minister had previously decided to release 10 million barrels from French strategic reserves on October 7. The Government stated this measure "should lead to a decrease of the order of 12 to 18 cents per liter." Anne Le Hénanff assured that all gas stations, including independents, would benefit from this, but the actual impact in Corsica remains uncertain.
