Corsica declares 34 communes a natural disaster zone after severe flooding and landslides in late October.
Natural disaster declared in Corsica
One week after exceptional weather conditions hit Corsica, particularly the Eastern Plain, causing significant flooding and landslides, a decree dated October 27 and published this Thursday in the Official Journal recognizes the state of natural disaster for 34 communes in Haute-Corse.Affected communes listed
The affected communes include Aghione, Aleria, Antisanti, Borgo, Castellare-di-Casinca, Cervione, Ghisonaccia, Giuncaggio, Lucciana, Ortale, Penta-di-Casinca, Pero-Casevecchie, Pianello, Piazzali, Poggio-Mezzana, Poggio-di-Nazza, Prunelli-di-Fiumorbo, Pruno, San-Damiano, San-Giovanni-di-Moriani, Santa-Lucia-di-Moriani, Santa-Reparata-di-Moriani, Serra-di-Fiumorbo, Solaro, Sorbo-Ocagnano, Taglio-Isolaccio, Talasani, Tallone, Valle-d'Alesani, Valle-di-Campoloro, Velone-Orneto, Ventiseri, Venzolasca and Vescovato.Heavy rainfall recorded
The decree concerns damage caused by floods and landslides that occurred on October 19 and 20, when 538.5 mm of rain fell in Solenzara in just six hours. This amount of rainfall is unusually high and contributed significantly to the flooding and landslides in the region.Insurance compensation available
The declaration should allow affected people to request compensation from their insurance companies for material damage directly related to the weather conditions, subject to applicable legal and contractual conditions. This means that residents can seek financial assistance for property damage, provided their insurance policies cover such events.
