Broadcaster Emma Barnett is reportedly preparing to leave BBC Radio 4 "within weeks," according to the i newspaper. Barnett joined the station's flagship news and current affairs program, Today, in 2024. Her departure is expected to follow that of Amol Rajan, who left the station earlier this month. Rajan, who had been with BBC Radio 4 since 2021 and also hosted the popular quiz show University Challenge, conducted his final show alongside Barnett, during which he emotionally signed off for the last time. Barnett’s colleagues have said she is “excited to move on to her next challenge,” and it is understood that she will remain with the BBC. She has been in “long discussions” about hosting a new current affairs podcast for BBC Sounds. Barnett presented Rajan’s final show with him, and during the broadcast, Rajan told listeners: “After more than 1,000 hours, hundreds of pips, a few crashes, it is time to say goodbye. It has been such an honour sitting in this studio with you, Emma, with all the presenters but above all, with the amazing team behind the glass.” Rajan concluded his final broadcast with personal messages to his wife and children, followed by a playing of the theme tune to Only Fools and Horses, a nod to his own "spirit of Del Boy" on his first day at the station. The BBC has not yet announced a replacement for Rajan, who also appears in the second series of The Celebrity Traitors. The BBC and representatives for Emma Barnett have been contacted for comment.
