Keychron, a company best known for producing mechanical keyboards, has entered the premium docking station market with its new Thunderbolt 5 Dock. This device is designed for professionals and power users who need a single connection point for multiple peripherals, displays, and power. It utilizes Intel's Thunderbolt 5 interface, which can transfer data at up to 80Gbps (with a 120Gbps boost mode), support dual 8K monitors, and deliver up to 140W of power to charge laptops and other devices. The dock provides 14 ports, including USB 3.2, SD card slots, HDMI, Ethernet, and Thunderbolt ports, making it a versatile hub for various devices. One of the key features of the Thunderbolt 5 Dock is its ability to support up to four displays simultaneously. However, users of Apple's macOS may notice limitations when using the HDMI ports, as the operating system doesn't support multiple displays through HDMI splitters or hubs, resulting in mirrored screens instead of extended desktops. Windows users, in contrast, have more flexibility with dual-HDMI support. The HDMI ports are limited to 4K/60Hz, meaning users who need 8K or higher resolutions must rely on the Thunderbolt ports. During testing, the dock was paired with a 13-inch foldable Asus laptop, turning it into a full setup for podcasting and video production. It connected to a Rodecaster audio interface, a mirrorless camera, and a capture card, while also powering the laptop and driving multiple displays through a single cable. The dock’s design is sleek, with an "Apple-inspired" look featuring brushed aluminum and rubber feet that allow it to stand upright or lie flat. It also uses CNC-cut metal panels on the sides that act as heatsinks, eliminating the need for a fan and ensuring quiet operation. Keychron's Thunderbolt 5 Dock is priced at $350, slightly lower than some competitors like CalDigit's TS5 dock, Razer's Thunderbolt 5 Dock Chroma, and Anker's Prime TB5, which range from $379 to $399. While these alternatives offer similar connectivity, they often lack HDMI ports and include features such as an SSD bay or RGB lighting. Keychron's inclusion of two HDMI ports is a notable advantage, allowing users to set up complex display configurations without compromising on Thunderbolt ports. Though it lacks features like a 10Gb Ethernet port or an NVMe SSD slot, the dock is seen as a practical and cost-effective solution for those needing reliable media input/output and multi-display setups.
