A short time after its launch this summer, Google Maps has lost one of its features on Android Auto, with users reporting the sudden disappearance of the speedometer and speed limits from their screens. The real-time speedometer, which was introduced over the past few weeks on Android Auto, had addressed a long-standing gap compared to Apple CarPlay, which had already included this feature since the summer of 2024. The feature was designed to help drivers monitor their speed and stay within legal limits while driving, but now many are upset by its unexpected removal. Google has not yet officially commented on the issue, but users suggest it may be a temporary display bug rather than a permanent change. The speedometer had previously only been available on the mobile version of Google Maps and was rolled out to Apple CarPlay in 2024. It finally became available on Android Auto in July, combined with speed limit indicators, offering drivers a more comprehensive driving assistance tool. However, just as the feature was beginning to gain traction, users started reporting issues. On forums like Reddit, many drivers noted that the speedometer and related features vanished overnight from their Android Auto displays. In contrast, Apple CarPlay users have not experienced any changes, and the speedometer remains functional there. Some drivers also reported that other navigation elements, such as traffic lights, stop signs, and lane indicators, disappeared along with the speedometer. A few users found that they could restore the feature by exiting the beta versions of Google Maps and Android Auto and reinstalling stable versions of the apps. However, this solution does not always work, and some users continue to experience the issue. Meanwhile, Waze, a competing navigation app, is also reportedly facing similar display problems, though it is unclear if the issues are related. Until Google releases an official fix through an upcoming update, drivers affected by the problem must rely on their vehicle’s physical speedometer and road signs to monitor their speed. The incident highlights the challenges of integrating real-time data into automotive systems and underscores the importance of having backup methods for safe driving. For now, users are advised to stay alert and keep an eye on future updates from Google.
