Release and popularity of The Night Agent

Netflix subscribers began watching the first episodes of The Night Agent, an action series similar to Reacher, on March 23, 2023. The show quickly gained attention, becoming one of the most-watched English-language series globally for 17 weeks after its release.

Background and production details

The Night Agent is an adaptation of the 2020 novel of the same name by Matthew Quirk, and stars Gabriel Basso, who performed some of his character's stunts himself. The series follows Peter Sutherland, an FBI agent stationed at the White House, where he works at night.

Seasons and viewership trends

The series received two additional seasons in 2025 and 2026. However, as filming for the fourth season began in Los Angeles just before summer, Netflix announced that these would be the final episodes featuring Sutherland and cybersecurity expert Rose Larkin (Luciane Buchanan). The reason given was declining viewership.

Viewership numbers and cancellation

The series had accumulated 20.6 million views in the first week for season 1, compared to 13.9 million views for season 2 and 8.4 million views for season 3. The fourth and final season is expected to be "memorable," according to the network.

Creator's perspective and audience reception

Following the cancellation announcement, Shawn Ryan, the series creator, spoke about the upcoming end of the series: "Since the beginning of The Night Agent's success, I have been obsessed with the idea of providing a fitting conclusion to the series and to Peter Sutherland's destiny." He promised that the fourth and final season, on which the teams were working "with great effort," would be "memorable."

Audience ratings and future availability

Members of Allociné gave The Night Agent an overall rating of 4 out of 5, based on an average of 2,983 reviews. However, there is no panic: even though this original series is being canceled after its fourth season, it will remain available on the platform.
