Eiji Aonuma honored by France

Eiji Aonuma, the producer of The Legend of Zelda, received the title of Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters from the French Ministry of Culture in October of last year. This honor recognizes his contributions to video game development and his role in shaping one of the most successful video game franchises in history.

Zelda’s global success

The Zelda series has sold nearly 160 million copies since its debut in 1986. Aonuma sees the award as a tribute to all developers who have worked on the series over the years, highlighting the collective effort behind its enduring popularity.

Ocarina of Time as a milestone

Aonuma considers the development of Ocarina of Time for the Nintendo 64 as the most significant moment of his career. It was the first Zelda game in 3D and marked a major turning point for the franchise, expanding its creative possibilities and setting new standards for the genre.

Balancing tradition and innovation

Aonuma emphasizes that his creative process involves balancing familiar elements with new ideas. He draws inspiration from everyday life and his love of music, ensuring that each Zelda game feels both familiar and fresh to players.

Early career and diverse experience

Aonuma did not initially plan to spend his career on Zelda. When he joined Nintendo, he had no idea he would become a game developer. His early work on non-Zelda projects provided valuable experience that later helped him when he joined the Zelda team.

Music and personal growth

Aonuma is part of a music group within Nintendo called The Wind Waker and has a particular interest in Latin American percussion instruments. He also noted that with age, he has become more emotionally sensitive, experiencing unexpected emotions while playing Ocarina of Time again.

Future plans and new releases

Aonuma expressed hope to continue creating meaningful games and is excited about the release of Ocarina of Time on Nintendo Switch 2. This version offers a new interpretation of the classic game, providing players with a richer and more immersive experience.
