In March of last year, fans of the popular Netflix series Bridgerton were thrilled by the first teaser for season 5. This new chapter will center on the romance between Francesca Bridgerton and Michaela Stirling, characters from the sixth book in Julia Quinn's Bridgerton series, When He Was Wicked. Showrunner Jess Brownell confirmed that this season will highlight "queer joy" rather than "queer trauma," aiming to focus on the positive aspects of same-sex relationships. The story follows Francesca, an introverted middle child, who returns to the marriage market two years after the death of her husband, John Stirling, for practical reasons. However, her feelings for Michaela, John’s cousin, challenge her initial plans and force her to consider her true desires. Set against the backdrop of both the refined social circles of London and the rugged landscapes of Scotland, season 5 will explore themes of desire and the societal taboos surrounding queer relationships. Jess Brownell emphasized that the season will focus on "intense longing," a theme particularly relevant to those in sapphic relationships. Francesca will find support from her brother Benedict, who is openly queer, and the season’s soundtrack will feature carefully chosen covers by queer artists, reflecting the story's emotional core. While the main storyline follows Francesca and Michaela, the other Bridgerton siblings will also have their moments. Penelope, played by Nicola Coughlan, will take a step back from her role as Lady Whistledown, the anonymous gossip writer, after her secret was revealed. She will focus on writing fiction, supported by her husband, Colin. A new character will take over the role of Lady Whistledown to maintain the intrigue in London's high society. The season will also include appearances from other Bridgerton couples, such as Benedict and Sophie, who are enjoying their married life. Daphne and Simon, played by Phoebe Dynevor and Regé-Jean Page respectively, will have limited appearances after their storylines concluded in earlier seasons. Three new characters will join the cast: Christopher Anderson, the son of Marcus Anderson, who was previously involved with Violet Bridgerton; Helen Stirling, Michaela’s mother; and Lady Elizabeth Ashworth, a mysterious figure in high society. Season 5 of Bridgerton is scheduled to premiere on Netflix in 2027, with a sixth season already confirmed. The series continues to expand its world, offering new stories while maintaining the charm and drama that have made it a fan favorite.
