Arrowhead Studio delays Helldivers 3

Arrowhead Studio is not rushing to develop Helldivers 3 because its main competitor would be Helldivers 2, which has performed better than expected. This success makes it harder to recall the first game, and Helldivers 3 would face greater challenges due to the pressure of living up to expectations.

Studio focuses on Helldivers 2 updates

Johan Pilestedt, who leads Arrowhead Studio, told Rock Paper Shotgun that a small team is working on the next game, though he did not confirm if it is Helldivers 3. This "small team" represents only 5% of the studio’s current workforce, while the rest focuses on improving Helldivers 2.

Community-driven approach to game development

Pilestedt explained that rushing a sequel could be counterproductive, especially for managing the game’s community. He believes a sequel would reset the experience, requiring players to start over. For Arrowhead, players are central to the game’s success, driving engagement through social interaction and content creation.

Avoiding internal competition

Pilestedt noted that releasing a sequel immediately would create competition with Helldivers 2. For a Helldivers 3 to make sense, it would need to be distinct enough to coexist with Helldivers 2. For now, improving Helldivers 2 daily is seen as a better strategy than disrupting its current dynamics.

Uncertainty about other projects

As long as Helldivers 2 continues to perform well, Arrowhead will not divert all its resources to a new game. The nature of the other project being developed at the studio remains unclear, raising questions about whether it is a new game under a different license or not.
