The role of an orchestrator in artificial intelligence is likened to that of a foreman in a factory, coordinating various tasks and ensuring smooth operations. According to an analysis by Draup, a firm specializing in data recruitment, revealed by CNBC, these professionals earn about 13,100 euros per month. This new profession has seen a surge in demand, rising by 1,700% at Wall Street, reflecting a broader trend where artificial intelligence is generating many jobs, especially in the global financial center.
Job offers related to artificial intelligence at Wall Street have increased by 49% in 2026 compared to 2025, reaching 139,819 job postings. Mentions of the skill "orchestrator" in job offers from banks have surged by 1,721% in a year, increasing from 108 in 2025 to 1,967 in 2026. "It is probably the most sought-after skill at Wall Street currently," says Vijay Swaminathan, CEO of Draup, to CNBC. The job involves designing a sequence of specialized AI assistants, organizing their tasks, determining which agents are needed, assigning functions, selecting data access, and planning when the system should stop and request human help. These specialists need to understand both AI and the specific field in which it is applied. In a bank, they may work with trading rooms, compliance departments, human resources, or back-office operations. Even simple tasks like approving employee leave can become complex due to numerous exceptions, requiring careful planning for incomplete information or decisions needing human validation.
Orchestration is not the only skill in high demand. Mentions of "LangGraph" have increased by 679%, from 680 to 5,300. This is not a job but a tool that allows engineers to build automated processes in multiple steps, enabling different agents to work together. Similarly, mentions of "LlamaIndex" have risen by 291%, to 2,672. This tool connects AI applications to a company's internal data. Skills in RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) have also grown significantly, with mentions increasing by 259% to 5,262. RAG allows AI to search for relevant information in a company's document databases before generating a response. In a bank, this means the AI can consult internal procedures, financial documents, or other updated information rather than relying solely on its training data.
The rapid adoption of AI is driving up salaries. According to Draup, a generative AI expert earns a median base salary of 172,937 dollars per year, a machine learning engineer 166,764 dollars, and an AI engineer 164,736 dollars. These figures do not include bonuses or stock options. Banks are also heavily recruiting professionals to oversee their AI systems. Mentions of "responsible AI" skills have surged by 657% in a year, as have those related to AI governance (394%) and risk management (359%). These specialists ensure AI systems operate within legal and ethical boundaries, controlling data access, regulatory compliance, and decisions requiring human input. Salaries for these roles are also high, with a generative AI manager earning a median base salary of 190,836 dollars per year and an AI manager 182,957 dollars. Top roles, such as chief data scientists, can reach up to 235,158 dollars per year, or nearly 20,000 dollars per month, excluding bonuses.
These high salaries, however, do not necessarily reflect entry-level positions. While these jobs are new, banks are seeking experienced professionals rather than beginners. Draup notes that many individuals transitioning into these roles come from established fields such as software engineering, data science, or machine learning. For instance, "forward-deployed engineers" — experts sent directly to traders, bankers, or other employees to understand their needs and develop AI tools — are primarily recruited from software engineering backgrounds. Additionally, banks are investing heavily in training their current employees to acquire these new skills, ensuring they can adapt to the evolving AI landscape.
