Woman finds newborn in shopping bag

Sandra, a 58-year-old Italian woman, discovered a blue shopping bag containing a newborn baby near a green space in Cinisello Balsamo, a suburb of Milan, while walking her dog on Monday afternoon.

Bag was moving and contained a baby

The bag was tied with two knots and appeared to be moving when Sandra’s dog sniffed it. Upon opening it, she found a white sheet stained with blood and a newborn’s head, with the placenta still attached. The baby began to cry shortly after being uncovered.

Passerby helps until emergency services arrive

Sandra, without her phone, asked a known passerby to call for help. They used a sweatshirt to keep the baby warm while waiting for emergency services, which provided guidance on caring for the newborn to prevent hypothermia.

Baby receives medical care and is in stable condition

An ambulance and police arrived quickly, and the baby was transported to Niguarda Hospital in Milan. He is in good health but will need to remain under medical supervision for about two weeks in the neonatal intensive care unit.

Sandra feels shaken but relieved

Sandra described feeling deeply affected by the discovery, citing the blood and shock of finding a newborn as overwhelming. However, she expressed relief that the baby is safe and credited her dog for leading her to the bag. She believes she was meant to be there at that moment.
