A new interpretation of The Exorcist franchise is being developed, with Mike Flanagan, known for directing The Haunting of Hill House and Midnight Mass, set to take the helm. Flanagan is replacing David Gordon Green, who was originally hired to direct a trilogy but stepped away after the 2023 release of Exorcist: Legion, which received poor reviews. This new version of William Peter Blatty’s original novel will feature an entirely new story and a completely new cast, with Scarlett Johansson in a leading role.
In promoting his upcoming series Carrie, which will premiere on Prime Video on October 7, Flanagan spoke to AlloCiné about the project. He emphasized that this version of The Exorcist will not be a remake of the 1973 film directed by William Peter Blatty or a direct remix of previous adaptations. Instead, it will be an original story that draws from key elements of the original narrative but presents them in a fresh and different way.
The plot follows a police officer who is investigating new crimes linked to her past, specifically the thirteen years since she stopped a satanic serial killer. Meanwhile, her twelve-year-old son becomes the target of a demonic entity. This storyline shares some similarities with Exorcist II: The Heretic, a 1977 film also directed by Blatty, which featured a serial killer played by Brad Dourif.
The film’s cast includes Diane Lane, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Laurence Fishburne, and Jacobi Jupe, who gained recognition for his performance in Hamnet. Early rumors suggest that John Leguizamo might portray the serial killer responsible for the demonic possession. The film’s official title may be The Exorcist: Martyrs, with a planned release in French cinemas on March 10, 2027.
