President Emmanuel Macron convened a meeting on Friday with leaders of the political parties represented in the French Parliament to discuss how the current international situation is affecting the security and daily lives of French citizens. Officials from several intelligence and security agencies, including the DGSI, DGSE, DRM, DGEC, and SGDSN, provided updates on the ongoing war in Ukraine and the tensions in the Middle East. In response to increased hybrid threats from Russia, Macron reaffirmed France's support for Ukraine and its stance on sanctions against Russia. The country has heightened its security measures, especially to protect critical infrastructure and sensitive locations from cyberattacks and drone threats, and is working to counter foreign interference. The President highlighted the severe human toll of the war in Ukraine, with significant casualties on both sides. He noted that the nature of Russian aggression in Europe is evolving, with recent incidents such as drone attacks on a passenger train near Kiev, failed attempts to attack Leipzig airport, and unauthorized flights into European airspace raising concerns about hybrid threats. In response, France has increased its security readiness and is exploring legislative steps to better defend against cyberattacks and foreign interference. The conflicts in the Middle East and the Near East have led to a sharp rise in energy prices, with the average cost of diesel reaching 2.39 euros per liter. Macron explained that these price increases are linked to the ongoing wars and international tensions, including the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and the consequences of attacks by the United States and Israel in Iran. France is actively working to ensure the peaceful reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and has engaged in diplomatic talks with countries like Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and the United Arab Emirates to secure energy supplies and diversify energy routes. The G7 will soon meet to coordinate on energy reserves and strategies among member nations. Addressing concerns raised by Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk about hybrid Russian attacks targeting countries supporting Ukraine, Macron acknowledged the validity of these worries and stressed the importance of vigilance and unity in the face of Russian actions. He emphasized that European security is directly at stake in the conflict in Ukraine and that Europe must remain united and resilient. Regarding the domestic situation in France, Macron recognized the challenges faced by the French people and the potential for social unrest. He urged unity and focused efforts to address the root causes of the current crises and stressed the government's role in managing the situation with transparency in the democratic process. He also noted that while there have been no concrete threats on French soil, the country has faced hybrid attacks, including cyberattacks and disinformation campaigns. Macron emphasized the need for continued vigilance and preparedness, highlighting France and Europe's efforts to secure energy supplies and reduce prices.
