Protest turns violent in Lyon

Protests in Lyon on October 31, 2026, turned violent when groups of black blocs and pro-Palestinian activists damaged the tram station at place Jean-Macé. Demonstrators threw projectiles and fireworks at police, who responded with tear gas, escalating the confrontation.

Authorized procession reaches destination

The demonstration, which had been authorized by the prefecture between the Manufacture des Tabacs and place Jean-Macé, reached its final destination by 15:30. However, authorities remained concerned that some demonstrators might not disperse and could attempt to move toward the Presqu'île.

Public transport suspended to prevent escalation

To prevent unauthorized groups from reaching the Presqu'île, the prefecture requested and obtained the suspension of the TCL network. Metro lines A, C, and D were completely shut down, with a return to normal operations expected by 18:00 depending on the situation.

Arrests made for prohibited equipment

The prefecture announced that six arrests had already been made, most of them prior to the demonstration for possession of prohibited equipment and protective gear. National police from a republican security company arrested an individual in the early afternoon for transporting materials that could be used to launch a homemade explosive device against law enforcement.

Security forces on high alert

Internal security forces were mobilized throughout the day to prevent public order disturbances and ensure the safety of people and property. The third act of the mobilization has started in Lyon, connecting the Manufacture des Tabacs to place Jean-Macé without the possibility of joining the city center.

Restricted areas remain off-limits

The Presqu'île, along with a large area including the Vieux-Lyon, the 6th arrondissement, and the Guillotière, remained prohibited to the public. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely.
