Thales Alenia Space is building eight Galileo Second Generation satellites, enhancing Europe's navigation sovereignty with advanced tech and cyber security.
Two new Galileo satellites assigned to Thales Alenia Space
Thales Alenia Space, a joint venture between Thales and Leonardo, has been assigned two additional satellites for the Galileo Second Generation constellation under a contract with the European Space Agency (ESA). This assignment increases the number of Galileo Second Generation satellites developed by Thales Alenia Space to eight.Advanced technology in the new satellites
The new satellites use advanced technologies such as inter-satellite links and digitally configurable antennas. These features are expected to improve the accuracy of the Galileo system and make its signals more resistant to interference and jamming. The satellites are designed to operate for 15 years and are part of efforts to enhance European sovereignty in navigation.Manufacturing in the Space Smart Factory
The two new satellites will be built and tested in the Space Smart Factory in Rome, Italy. This facility is one of Europe's most advanced satellite manufacturing sites, known for its digital and reconfigurable capabilities. Giampiero Di Paolo, a senior executive at Thales Alenia Space, highlighted the company's contribution to the Galileo program and its role in developing the ground segment.Leadership and collaboration in the project
Hervé Derrey, CEO of Thales Alenia Space, emphasized the company's pride in contributing to the Galileo Second Generation. He noted that the program is vital for European strategic autonomy and will influence space navigation services for decades. The project involves a European consortium with partners from 14 countries, including Thales, Leonardo, and Spaceopal.ESA's role in the Galileo program
The European Space Agency (ESA) is responsible for the design, development, and testing of the Galileo system and its ground infrastructure. It also oversees research and development activities for the program under the European Horizon Europe initiative. The European Union Space Agency (EUSPA) manages service operations and ensures the system meets market and user needs.Thales Alenia Space's global expertise
Thales Alenia Space combines technological expertise and industrial capabilities to provide innovative solutions in areas like telecommunications, Earth observation, and space exploration. The company has over 50 years of experience and works with governments, institutions, and companies worldwide. It operates in seven countries with 14 sites across Europe and reported revenue of 2.36 billion euros in 2025.
