An 18-year-old from Kent, Washington, has been arrested in connection with a deadly fire that broke out on July 4. The incident, known as the Chelan Hills Fire, was caused when a group of individuals set off illegal fireworks from the back of a truck. One of the fireworks landed in dry roadside brush, sparking a fast-moving blaze that quickly spread across the area. The fire ultimately burned through approximately 15.6 square miles (40.4 square kilometers) and destroyed more than 100 structures, including homes and other buildings. The victim of the fire was identified as Robert Lister, a 69-year-old man from Orondo. His vehicle had slid off the road and was engulfed in flames, leading to his death. Authorities have confirmed that the fire was a direct result of the illegal fireworks, and the teenager arrested is one of several individuals involved in the incident. Douglas County Sheriff Tyler Caille stated that the teenager was part of a group that launched the fireworks, which led to the deadly blaze. Authorities are currently seeking arrest warrants for five other individuals believed to have participated in the fireworks display. Sheriff Caille has urged those individuals to turn themselves in, emphasizing that all those involved are over 18 years of age and are "complicit with the same crimes." The sheriff’s office is continuing to investigate the incident and is reminding the public of the dangers associated with illegal fireworks, which can lead to severe consequences, including loss of life and property. The Chelan Hills Fire serves as a stark reminder of the risks posed by the unauthorized use of fireworks, particularly in dry, fire-prone areas. Officials are encouraging anyone with information about the incident or the other individuals involved to come forward to assist with the ongoing investigation.
