HBO has released a teaser trailer for its upcoming Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone television series, based on the first book in J.K. Rowling’s beloved fantasy series. The trailer introduces young actors Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. The cast also includes notable names like Janet McTeer as Professor McGonagall, John Lithgow as Headmaster Dumbledore, Paapa Essiedu as Professor Snape, and Nick Frost as Hagrid. The trailer previews key scenes from the story, including the Hogwarts sorting ceremony, Harry’s first Quidditch match, and the trio’s early lessons in magic. The first season is set to premiere on HBO Max this Christmas. The teaser opens with Professor McGonagall (Janet McTeer) addressing first-year students at Hogwarts, explaining that they must complete the sorting ceremony before the school feast. The three main characters are shown in various scenes: Hermione (Arabella Stanton) tries to make friends on the Hogwarts Express by talking about her summer reading, while Ron (Alastair Stout) struggles with his acceptance letter after his older brothers spill jam on it. Harry (Dominic McLaughlin) is summoned to the Great Hall for the sorting. When told that being placed in a house “decides your entire future,” he whispers, “Not Slytherin,” and is sorted into Gryffindor. The trailer also shows Harry’s early struggles with magic. Despite being expected to be a gifted wizard, he admits, “Everyone thinks I’m this great wizard… but I don’t really know anything.” His teacher, Professor Snape (Paapa Essiedu), challenges him to prove his talent on the Quidditch pitch, where Harry is seen flying through the sky as his friends cheer. He also spends time with Hagrid (Nick Frost), who tells him, “Family is more than just blood. You’ll find your place.” Magical elements like the moving chess pieces, the glowing Gryffindor crest, and the invisibility cloak are also glimpsed. The tone shifts as the trio discovers something mysterious, leading to a moment of fear and confusion. Dumbledore (John Lithgow) tells McGonagall, “We can’t protect them, we can only prepare them,” hinting at future challenges. Hermione warns, “Anything could be lurking behind any door in this place,” before the trio turns a page in a book titled The Philosopher’s Stone. Harry and Ron are caught off guard by Hermione’s knowledge, prompting her to question, “Don’t you two read?” The first season of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone will debut on HBO Max this Christmas, with the series planning to adapt all seven books over the next decade.
