A new stage production based on Hans Fallada's 1947 novel Seul dans Berlin will be performed at the National Popular Theatre in Villeurbanne from September 29 to October 17, 2026. The play, titled Seul dans Berlin — Une petite affaire, is a freely adapted version of the novel, translated by Laurence Courtois and published by Gallimard in the "Folio" collection. This adaptation brings the story to the stage with a focus on its themes of resistance, loss, and quiet defiance during a turbulent time in history. The novel follows Otto and Anna Quangel, an elderly couple in Berlin during World War II, who begin writing and distributing anti-Hitler messages on postcards after learning of the death of their son, who died as a hero "for the Fatherland." Their act of resistance, both seemingly small and profoundly heroic, becomes a source of meaning in their lives until they are eventually arrested and put on trial. The story highlights the moral dilemmas and personal sacrifices of those who resisted the Nazi regime in subtle, everyday ways. The stage production is directed by Jean Bellorini, with Camille de La Guillonnière and Clara Mayer in leading roles. The adaptation is credited to Camille de La Guillonnière, with scenography by Véronique Chazal, lighting by Jean Bellorini, and assistance from Mathilde Foltier-Gueydan. The sound and video are handled by Léo Rossi-Roth, while the music is composed by Clément Griffault and costumes are designed by Fanny Brouste. The set and costume production is handled by the workshops of the TNP. The production is estimated to last one hour and 30 minutes. It promises to be a poignant and visually compelling interpretation of a powerful story, offering audiences a chance to reflect on the impact of individual actions in times of oppression.
