Katia Sanerot, general director of Louie Media and president of the Syndicat des producteurs et indépendants de l’audio (PIA), spoke about the growth of podcast studios and the challenges they face in gaining recognition. Louie Media, which recently returned under the theme of "imperfect bonds" led by president Charlotte Pudlowski, aims to continue its economic growth by focusing on flagship programs like Passages and Émotions, two of the most powerful French podcasts. Passages is noted as the first true story podcast in terms of number of listens per episode. The company plans to expand and diversify its audiences and revenues, emphasizing the importance of maintaining editorial development. Louie Creative, Louie Media's integrated creative agency, is experiencing a record year with more than 30 productions in progress, including audio fiction, podcast adaptations, and video documentaries. Training sessions for businesses and individuals via the CPF are nearly full.
Sanerot, reappointed as president of the PIA, outlined a roadmap to elevate the podcast industry, which currently lacks a legal status, adapted rights, and access to mechanisms available to other cultural sectors. The PIA supports a bill proposal by deputy Erwan Balanant (Modem) for the recognition of sound creation and advocates for a tax credit for production, similar to those in the audiovisual sector. Efforts also include integrating news podcasts into the SPEL status, regulating AI in audio, evolving the SMAD status for streaming platforms, and forming European cooperation with an alliance of eight countries. Partnerships such as the agreement with Radio France to distribute publishers are highlighted, along with new committees on monetization and distribution.
The podcast industry is described as a micro-sector striving for economic balance, with nearly one in two French people listening to podcasts monthly and digital audio advertising growing by about 25% annually. However, the model remains demanding, as audio has historically been free, unlike audiovisual content. Some podcasts are already very profitable, while others, such as documentaries, youth, and fiction, may not be profitable through advertising alone. The PIA requests tools such as the audiovisual tax credit, tax-deductible donations, and reduced VAT for equal treatment.
AI is seen as an opportunity for development, offering possibilities in accessibility through voice synthesis or translation. However, platforms flooded with AI-generated content may drown out human content. The AI Act imposes transparency on synthetic content, but platforms must display it clearly to avoid affecting audiences and revenues.
Sanerot shared personal reflections, noting the closure of September at Céline Dion's concert and her typical Sundays involving running or yoga, dealing with lice, baking cookies, and seeking automation. She recommended the podcast 57, rue de Varenne (France Inter) and Menteuse menteuse from Passages. Upcoming plans include the launch of a new book, Autant que l'amour, co-edited with L'Iconoclaste, focusing on friendship.
