Enaelle, a 17-year-old student at the Paul-Valéry university in Montpellier, says she was struck in the face with a baton by a police officer during a protest at the Clemenceau high school on October 2. Enaelle claims she and others arrived at the school around 9:30 a.m. to support students who were participating in a blockade. She said that police were present, and some individuals—described as either high school or middle school students, though not necessarily from Clemenceau—launched projectiles. According to Enaelle, a police officer raised his baton and struck her in the face. Enaelle described how multiple times, the CRS (Républicain Civil et Securitaire), a specialized police unit, threatened to charge and that a line of protesters formed to protect the students. She said that initially, those launching projectiles were separate from the group, but later positioned themselves behind the protesters' line. Enaelle recounted speaking to a CRS officer who told her, "If it were only you, we wouldn't be here." After another projectile was launched, the police charged, and Enaelle said she was struck with a shield in the ribs before being hit in the face with a baton. According to Midi Libre, several witnesses at the scene indicated that Enaelle was struck in the face by a baton from a police officer from the departmental intervention company while she was in a stationary position during the police charge. The incident was also noted by the Observatoire des libertés de Montpellier (OLM), a local organization that monitors civil liberties and police conduct. The OLM has been tracking similar incidents across the region and has called for increased transparency and accountability in law enforcement actions.
