French football star Kylian Mbappé and Olympic judo champion Teddy Riner have recently faced criticism from members of the far-right political party, the Rassemblement national (RN). Mbappé, who plays for Real Madrid and leads the French national football team, became a topic of debate after he refused to wear a full shirt supporting the residents of Ceuta, a Spanish enclave on the North African coast that has been at the center of a migration dispute with Morocco. Mbappé explained that while he wanted to show support for Ceuta’s people, he also wished to highlight the plight of migrants who have died or live in difficult conditions, emphasizing that he did not want to prioritize one group’s suffering over another. The RN, known for its anti-immigration stance, responded sharply to Mbappé’s comments. Deputy Julien Odoul criticized Mbappé on the ultra-conservative media platform Cnews, calling his actions a "behavior of a small gang" and suggesting that if shame had a face, it would be Mbappé’s. Other RN figures, including Isère deputy Alexis Jolly and European deputy Marion Maréchal, accused Mbappé of being a "subversion agent serving the enemies of European peoples." They questioned why he expressed solidarity with global migrants but not with Europeans facing their own challenges. Teddy Riner, a five-time Olympic judo champion, also drew the attention of far-right voices after expressing concern about the rise of the far-right in a televised interview on the program "Stade 2." Riner mentioned that the growing influence of far-right groups "makes him nervous." In response, Julien Odoul commented on X (formerly Twitter), saying, "Poor kid. Everything will be fine, Teddy!" Riner, who aspires to win a gold medal at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics before potentially entering politics, has previously hinted that he might pursue a political career in the future, though he has stated it is not the right time yet. Both Mbappé and Riner have found themselves in the public eye not only for their athletic achievements but also for their public stances on social and political issues. Their comments have sparked broader conversations about the role of public figures in expressing political views and the reactions they may face from different parts of the political spectrum.
