The captain of the French football team, Kylian Mbappé, is facing criticism from members of the National Rally (RN), a far-right political party in France, who accuse him of hiding a message on a shirt supporting the residents of Ceuta, a Spanish enclave near Morocco. The tensions in Ceuta have escalated since a large influx of migrants from Morocco in late July, leading to protests and unrest. On Wednesday, several deputies from the RN in the French National Assembly criticized Mbappé for not fully displaying a shirt with the phrase "We are all Maquereaux" (Todos somos Caballas), a nickname for Ceuta's residents. This message was part of a broader effort to show solidarity with the local population amid the crisis. During a match on Tuesday, Real Madrid players, including Mbappé, wore white shirts with the "We are all Maquereaux" message as they entered the pitch. However, three players, including Mbappé and two other French national team members, rolled up their shirts to conceal the message. This decision drew criticism in Spain and was highlighted by National Rally deputies. Alexandre Sabatou, a deputy from Oise, questioned whether this was appropriate for the captain of the French team. Kévin Mauvieux, an RN deputy, called Mbappé "shameful," while others accused him of disrespecting the country and club that support him. Some even shared edited images of Mbappé wearing the full shirt in support of Ceuta. The situation in Ceuta has been volatile since more than 70,000 migrants entered the enclave illegally from Morocco on July 30 and 31. Most of them reportedly returned to Morocco shortly after, but thousands remained, leading to violence and protests by the local population. The crisis has become a political issue for Spain, with opposition parties criticizing Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez's handling of the situation as the 2027 legislative elections approach. Meanwhile, a close associate of one of the players involved explained to Le Monde that the decision to conceal the message was made just before entering the pitch, emphasizing that "the best thing in football is to not make politics." Real Madrid confirmed that players were free to choose whether to wear the shirt, respecting their personal sensitivities. This is not the first time Mbappé has drawn ire from the National Rally. During the 2024 legislative elections, he encouraged young people to vote, warning that "the extremes" were "at the gates of power." He reiterated this message during the runoff, without naming the RN, urging people to vote to prevent the far-right from gaining influence. His comments were seen as a direct challenge to the party's political ambitions.
