Volkswagen launches ID.Polo electric car

Volkswagen has introduced the ID.Polo, an electric city car starting at 20,500 euros, as part of its efforts to correct past mistakes in its transition to zero-emission vehicles. The company aims to build on its previous electric models while addressing customer concerns that have hindered adoption.

Challenges in electric vehicle shift

Six years after the launch of the ID.3 in 2020, Volkswagen has not fully succeeded in converting its customer base to electric vehicles. Models have faced criticism for limited range, high prices, and ergonomic issues, which have slowed the transition from traditional gasoline-powered cars.

New naming and platform

The brand has shifted from previous model names like "e-Golf" to a new naming convention using the ID acronym followed by a number. This change has caused confusion among customers accustomed to traditional names like Golf, Polo, and Tiguan. The ID.Polo uses the new MEB Entry platform, specifically designed for city cars and urban SUVs.

Design and space features

The ID.Polo uses a front-wheel drive configuration, which reduces manufacturing costs and increases interior space. It offers a trunk volume of 441 liters in a vehicle only 4.05 meters long, more space than the longer ID.3 Neo despite its shorter length.

Interior design improvements

The interior of the ID.Polo includes physical buttons on the steering wheel and under the vents, a 12.9-inch central screen, and a 10.25-inch instrument cluster inspired by the first Golf from 1974. These design elements aim to address previous criticisms from the media and customers.

Pricing and affordability

Pricing for the ID.Polo includes an entry-level Trend version with a 37 kWh battery starting at 24,995 euros. With discounts, the price can drop to 20,460 euros. Additional aids can bring the cost down further for modest families, while the top-of-the-range Style version peaks at 39,490 euros before discounts.

Competition and sales success

The ID.Polo faces competition from models such as the Renault 5 E-Tech, Citroën ë-C3, and Peugeot e-208, as well as the Cupra Raval. Despite this, the ID.Polo has recorded a historic start with 10,022 cumulative orders, including 5,215 in September alone, surpassing previous records for thermal Polos.

Upcoming ID.Polo GTI model

Volkswagen has also announced pre-orders for the ID.Polo GTI, a 100% electric model with 226 horsepower. It can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.8 seconds and offers up to 431 km of range. This model is expected to be a highlight at the Paris Motor Show starting October 12.
