Volkswagen has introduced the ID. Polo GTI, its first fully electric version of the popular GTI model, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the iconic sporty lineup. The ID. Polo GTI is a compact electric vehicle that maintains the look of a city car while adapting the GTI legacy to the plug-in era. Pre-orders for the ID. Polo GTI in France began on October 8, with deliveries expected in 2027. The vehicle is based on the existing ID. Polo electric model, which has already found a market in France.
The ID. Polo GTI is powered by a 166 kW (226 hp) electric motor producing 290 Nm of torque, driving the front wheels. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.8 seconds and reaches a top speed of 190 km/h, a figure determined by customer preferences. The vehicle includes a controlled differential lock on the front axle, progressive steering, and an adaptive DCC suspension system. A 52 kWh battery provides up to 431 km of WLTP autonomy, and the battery can charge from 10 to 80% in about 24 minutes using a fast charger.
Inside, the ID. Polo GTI offers more storage space than its traditional counterpart, with a trunk capacity increasing from 351 liters to 441 liters. An optional hitch can fit two electric bikes. The interior features a 10.25-inch digital cockpit display and a 12.9-inch central screen, with a retro mode that mimics the gauges of the Golf I. The design includes red stitching, a sport steering wheel with a 12 o'clock mark, and checkered-patterned seats. Additional features include a panoramic glass roof, front electric seats with 12 adjustments and pneumatic massage, and a Harman Kardon audio system.
The ID. Polo GTI starts at 41,450 euros in France, with the base ID. Polo priced at 35,820 euros and a lower-powered version starting at 24,995 euros. The GTI version offers 15 hp more, 0.3 seconds faster acceleration, and a 30 km/h higher top speed than the 211 hp ID. Polo, but at a 5,630 euro premium. Compared to other electric sporty models from Stellantis, such as the Peugeot E-208 GTi, Lancia Ypsilon HF, and Opel Corsa GSE, the ID. Polo GTI stands out with autonomy exceeding 400 km on the WLTP cycle and the highest top speed. The Alpine A290, with 220 hp, is also a competitor in the sporty electric car segment.
