Garmin, a well-known maker of fitness and navigation devices, released a new software update for its sport watches and GPS bike computers on August 18. The update brings several new features, though not all devices are compatible with every addition. One notable feature is voice command, which lets users start a timer or activity by saying “OK Garmin,” and switch to their smartphone’s assistant by saying “phone assistant.” However, this feature requires both a built-in microphone and speaker, which are not available on all models.
Another feature, fall detection, sends a real-time location message to predefined contacts in case of an accident. This function is only available on the Venu 4 model, as other devices like the Vivoactive 6, Fenix E, and Enduro 3 lack the necessary hardware to support it. Training-related updates include Quick Workout, which offers running sessions tailored to the user’s fitness level based on session length and intensity. Garmin also introduced new low-volume Run Coach plans that include walk-run sessions, which adapt daily based on the user’s recovery progress.
Additional updates include improved sharing settings between dive computers, an indoor cross-country skiing profile, and enhancements to the Enduro profile for mountain biking, which now automatically detects climbs and descents. However, some features introduced just days earlier with the Fenix 9, such as live activity tracking for outdoor activities, are not included in this update. This feature requires a Garmin Connect+ subscription and is not part of the current release.
The update is being rolled out in waves, and it may take several weeks for it to reach all compatible devices. If the update does not appear automatically, users can manually check for it through the Garmin Connect app. In addition to the watch update, Garmin also released version 3.20 for its Cirqa band, a screenless model. This update includes options to choose between single or long press button behaviors to start an activity, forces the use of the phone’s GPS when LiveTrack starts automatically, and adds a treadmill recalibration feature for manual distance entry.
