TokDrive, a new app launched in France on September 1, 2026, connects people who want to test drive used cars before buying them. Available on the App Store and Google Play, the app allows users to drive a car for at least 30 minutes with the owner present. In France, over five million used cars are sold annually, yet many buyers often skip or rush test drives. This can be risky, as purchasing a used car without driving it is akin to making a significant financial decision without firsthand experience. Julien and Maëva Bauer, the app’s creators, aim to change this by offering a structured, 30-minute test drive experience with clear rules and conditions. The app lets users search for a car model near them and propose up to three available time slots. Once agreed, the user gets to drive for at least 30 minutes, covering about 15 kilometers, with the car owner always present. Before and after the test drive, photos of the car's condition are taken, and a four-digit code is provided for verification. Users aren’t required to buy the car after the test drive; they can simply walk away if they’re not interested. The same applies to people who just want to drive a car they admire without any intention of purchasing. Julien and Maëva Bauer, who are full-time employees, developed TokDrive in their spare time. Julien handles the app’s technical and user experience aspects, while Maëva manages the legal, financial, and operational parts. The business model is based on a pricing grid that depends on the car's value. For a car worth up to €10,000, the test drive costs €15 for the buyer, with €10 going to the owner. For each additional €10,000 in value, the cost increases by €15, with no maximum limit. TokDrive’s commission is taken per test drive, not through a subscription model. Reserving a test drive currently costs users nothing. Stripe, the payment platform used by TokDrive, checks the user’s card and temporarily holds the amount, like a hotel deposit. The payment is only processed after both the buyer and owner sign a legally valid release form using their phones, following the eIDAS standard used across Europe. If the owner refuses or the appointment is canceled, the held amount is released without additional charges. Owners also receive their payment 48 hours after the test drive to allow time for any disputes. Identity verification is required for both parties before the first test drive, using a service that matches a selfie with an ID document. On the day of the test drive, the owner remains in control, deciding who drives and ensuring all conditions are met.
