Exhibition explores urban ephemera

In Marseille, the Maison de l’architecture et de la ville is hosting an exhibition titled Défense d’effacer, which focuses on temporary forms of public expression such as posters, banners, and anti-gentrification tags. These ephemeral elements often appear on walls, windows, and scaffolds before being removed or covered.

Exhibition highlights social issues

The exhibition showcases materials that address issues like the right to housing, opposition to touristification, and resistance to gentrification. These forms of expression are often overlooked in favor of commercial images that dominate public spaces.

Exhibition aims to engage and activate

Unlike traditional displays, the exhibition does not merely preserve these temporary documents. Instead, it seeks to activate, recompose, and re-print them, creating an interactive and investigative space for visitors to engage with the topic of urban ephemera.

Collaborative and participatory approach

The exhibition was developed collaboratively by the Maison de l’architecture et de la ville and Angéline Capon, a doctoral candidate at the Project[s] laboratory. It is designed as an immersive experience, allowing visitors to take ownership of the subject matter through participation.

Exhibition details and location

Défense d’effacer is open to the public until December 18, 2026, at the Maison de l’architecture et de la ville in Marseille. Admission is free, and more information can be obtained by contacting the venue directly.
