Exhibition in a former shelter
In Marseille, the exhibition L'Étreinte des lieux has turned the neo-Gothic chapel of Chez Marthe into a venue for art focused on the theme of hospitality. The event, held in a former shelter for women and children who were once homeless, showcases works by 120 artists from twenty countries. The exhibition is open until Friday, with final visits on Thursday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and on Friday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.Concept behind the exhibition
The exhibition was inspired by a conversation with a resident who described "her" bench, a spot that gave her a sense of belonging. Organized by Sandrine Kiefer, the event is structured around five thematic stages: inside/outside, threshold, key, home, and gestures of hospitality. The works—ranging from photos and paintings to ceramics—explore themes such as shelter, exile, and the space given to others.Artist highlights
One of the participating artists is Marie-Françoise de Gantès, who also restored the garden at Chez Marthe. Now a place of life and gathering for women and children, the garden is reflected in her piece Foyer Cabin, which uses recycled materials and ceramics to symbolize the fragile lives welcomed at the shelter.Community and fundraising
At the opening, 180 people attended, and artworks were sold to support the association. At least 25% of the price from each sale goes to Chez Marthe, and sometimes the full amount. The exhibition not only brings new visitors to the shelter center but also turns the act of visiting into a gesture of hospitality.
