France leads in fixed download speed

France has taken the top spot in the nPerf ranking for fixed download speed among countries with similar levels of wealth. The ranking, based on data from the third quarter of 2026, shows France's average fixed download speed at 360.20 Mbit/s, outperforming several major European nations.

Slovenia and Canada follow closely

Slovenia ranked second with an average speed of 316.45 Mbit/s, about 44 Mbit/s behind France. Canada followed with 292.46 Mbit/s, highlighting the gap between the top performers and the rest of the group.

Spain maintains a strong position

Spain came in fourth with an average speed of 265.72 Mbit/s, significantly ahead of the United Kingdom (174.85 Mbit/s) and Italy (173.01 Mbit/s). This shows a clear divide in internet speeds across European countries.

Israel and others lag behind

Israel ranked fifth with 197.07 Mbit/s, while Finland (136.72 Mbit/s) and the Czech Republic (134.70 Mbit/s) followed with smaller gaps. Japan closed the list with 115.95 Mbit/s, meaning French households download more than three times faster than those in Japan.

Measurement and limitations

The speed is measured in megabits per second, and a 2.15 Go file arrives in less than 50 seconds at France's average speed. However, nPerf only compares countries with similar wealth, defined by a per capita GDP between 35,000 and 60,000 dollars, excluding those with higher income levels.

User-based testing

The averages are based on tests initiated by internet users through the nPerf application or website. This method reflects real user experiences but can vary depending on the user's subscription and internet service provider.
