SMAE (Mahoraise des Eaux), the local water utility in Mayotte, has informed residents in several areas—including Zone Industrielle de Kawéni, Mtsapéré-Bonovo, Mtsapéré, Doujani + chemin de l’eau du collège, and Cavani sud (schools)—that a construction company working near a water distribution pipe accidentally removed an accessory from the network. This mistake led to a significant water leak, prompting emergency measures to protect the water supply. Although the company's staff acted quickly, the damage was extensive, with the distribution pipe being disconnected over a large section between Kawéni and Doujani. The repair work has been completed, but restoring full water flow to the affected areas is expected to take some time. As a result, it is currently not possible to specify an exact date for when water will be fully restored. SMAE has advised residents to be prepared for this delay and to take necessary precautions once water service is resumed. When water is restored, SMAE recommends that users close all taps in their homes and let the water run slowly for the first few minutes. This step helps to flush out any debris or contaminants that may have entered the system during the disruption. Residents should continue running the water until it becomes clear, collecting it in a container for non-food use during this time. For food-related purposes—such as drinking or cooking—SMAE advises boiling the water for the first half day after restoration to ensure it is safe. This precaution is recommended to protect against potential contamination, even after the water appears visually clear. The utility is working to restore full service as quickly as possible and will provide updates as they become available.
