Léa Salamé, a prominent journalist with France Télévisions, has revealed that her decision to step down from hosting the France 2 evening news program, 20 heures, was not her own but was instead imposed on her. She announced her departure in late August, shortly after her partner, Raphaël Glucksmann, declared his candidacy for the 2027 presidential election. In an interview with RTL, Salamé emphasized her wish to avoid any doubts about her journalistic integrity. She explained that she wanted to protect the trust she has built with millions of viewers and listeners over the years, especially during a time when journalists face widespread skepticism and frequent criticism. Salamé had previously mentioned that she would consider stepping down if her partner ran for president. She acknowledged the emotional and personal toll of the decision, which affected not only her but also her family, particularly her children. She noted that all relationships require compromise and pointed out that Glucksmann had previously adjusted his schedule to support her career, such as by taking on childcare responsibilities. This mutual effort has been a key part of their partnership. Raphaël Glucksmann will be competing in the left-wing primary elections, which will be held in two rounds on October 9-10 and 16-17. Salamé said whether she would return to hosting 20 heures after the election would depend on future decisions by the network’s management. She referenced a past situation when she stepped down for the European elections but later returned to her role, suggesting a similar possibility in this case. In the coming days, Salamé will return to France 2 to cover a special evening dedicated to forest fires alongside journalist Hugo Clément. She will then resume hosting her talk show Quelle époque! starting this Saturday. She had previously taken breaks from France Inter in 2019 and 2024 during Glucksmann’s campaign for the European elections. Her departure from 20 heures was reportedly triggered by Glucksmann’s official candidacy for the 2027 presidential election.
