Galopin Des Champs, a highly successful racehorse who won the prestigious Cheltenham Gold Cup twice, has passed away at the age of 10. The horse suffered a severe injury in his field shortly after being retired from racing, less than a week prior. Ruby Walsh, the jockey who rode him, confirmed the news through a statement to Racing TV, explaining that veterinary experts determined the horse had sustained an unrepairable injury to his front leg. According to Walsh, Galopin Des Champs was checked multiple times throughout the morning. However, when Walsh went to prepare him for exercise later in the day, he discovered the horse with a serious injury high up on his near front leg. Vets were immediately called to the scene, and X-rays confirmed extensive damage that could not be repaired. Galopin Des Champs had a remarkable racing career, winning the Cheltenham Gold Cup in both 2023 and 2024. He also claimed three Irish Gold Cup titles, two Savills Chases, and a Punchestown Gold Cup. The horse was trained by Willie Mullins, who recently announced his retirement, stating that Galopin Des Champs "could not do himself justice at the level he was used to." Throughout his career, Galopin Des Champs earned 12 Grade One victories, including his back-to-back Cheltenham Gold Cup wins. He had aimed to complete a hat-trick in the 2025 Cheltenham Gold Cup but finished second. He also achieved a hat-trick of Irish Gold Cup wins between 2023 and 2025. His last race was in February, where he placed third in an attempt to win a fourth Irish Gold Cup. A later setback prevented him from competing at the Cheltenham Festival in March. Raced by owners Audrey and Greg Turley, Galopin Des Champs secured 15 victories in 26 starts, earning nearly £2 million in prize money. After his retirement, the horse was expected to begin a new career in the equestrian world with the Walsh family. His passing has been met with widespread sadness from the racing community.
