Caelan Doris, the captain of both the Irish rugby team and Leinster, is expected to stay away from the field until January due to a knee infection that is delaying his return. The infection developed after surgery he had on his foot and knee, which followed an injury he sustained early in the URC final against the Bulls in June. Doris had initially been expected to return for the November international matches, but he has now missed three summer games in the Nations Championship against Australia, Japan, and New Zealand. His recovery is progressing well, with the hope that he will return at the very start of 2027. Doris's absence is a notable loss for Ireland. He played every minute of the five matches in the 2026 Six Nations Tournament and remains the team's captain under head coach Andy Farrell. His playing style combines strength in collisions, consistent performance after contact, and a strong defensive presence. Ireland's schedule is challenging, with matches against Argentina on November 6, Fiji on the 14th, and South Africa on the 21st, followed by the Nations Championship finals in London. These four matches will be missed by Doris. Leinster will also face the autumn without its captain. Earlier in September, coach Leo Cullen confirmed that Doris would keep the captaincy for the season. In his absence, Max Deegan was chosen to lead the team during their trip to play the Lions in Johannesburg. However, a potential return in early January could provide an ideal opportunity. Leinster will host Pau in the Champions Cup on January 9 and then travel to play Leicester at Welford Road on the 16th. These matches could serve as a good foundation before the 2027 Tournament, which will take place in a World Cup year, following a long break from competition. Doris had previously missed the 2025 Lions tour due to a shoulder injury. This new absence highlights the need for patience from one of Ireland's most important players. For both Farrell and Leinster, January has now become a crucial target for Doris's return.
