Reimagining a classic

The production, created by Beaver Dam Company, is a diptych that reinterprets the storyline of Stravinsky's L'Oiseau de feu through the lens of parenthood and contemporary societal tensions. It blends modern themes with the original fairy tale's narrative.

Exploring bedtime and family dynamics

The piece Avant la nuit explores the intimacy of bedtime, a suspended moment between wakefulness and sleep, where the dynamics of a family are revealed. It features two parents and ten children, performed by adults, with ordinary gestures of care and education becoming choreographic material.

Transition to a symbolic world

The performance then transitions into L'Oiseau de feu, using Stravinsky's full score, shifting into a symbolic and threatening universe. In this part, the children are drawn into the world of Kahtcheï, an antagonist from the original fairy tale, and gradually get lost in a space governed by uniformity and manipulation, with their parents attempting to free them.

Creative team and production details

The choreography is by Edouard Hue, with the musical score for Avant la nuit composed by Jonathan Soucasse and the set design by Yoko Seyama. The lighting is designed by Arnaud Viala, and the costumes are by Sigolène Pétey.
