Launch of Grey's Anatomy

On March 27, 2005, ABC began airing Grey's Anatomy, a medical series created by Shonda Rhimes that capitalized on the phenomenon caused by ER. The show quickly gained considerable success and gave rise to two spin-offs: Private Practice and Station 19.

Cast changes over time*

Over the years and seasons, many actors have left Grey's Anatomy to pursue new adventures. From the original cast, only Chandra Wilson (Bailey) and James Pickens Jr. (Richard Webber) remain regularly.

Chandra Wilson's reflections*

During an interview with People, the actress who plays Dr. Miranda Bailey spoke about the many departures that have marked Grey's Anatomy over the years. "I am always sad when I lose my babies," she said. "For me, they are all my babies."

Emotional impact of cast departures*

She noted that saying goodbye to her co-stars has never become easier over the seasons. Over the past 20 years, she has seen many talents come and go, including Sandra Oh (Cristina), Patrick Dempsey (Derek), Justin Chambers (Alex), and more recently, Kevin McKidd (Owen) and Kim Raver (Teddy), who left Grey's Anatomy during the last episode of season 22.

Continuing the legacy*

"I always wait for the day they will come back to play with us," she said. "When someone leaves, we always say it's over, that we will never recover. And then new babies arrive, and we start to attach to them just as well as the other characters in the series, who also have to get used to these new arrivals."

New character in season 23*

Season 23 of Grey's Anatomy, which is currently airing in the United States, has been marked by the arrival of a new character played by James Wolk: Dr. Seth Norton, a handsome and arrogant surgeon who has become a businessman and will help manage the new VIP floor of Grey Sloan. An arrival that should shake up the life of the hospital.
