New season of Grey’s Anatomy starts

The 23rd season of Grey’s Anatomy has begun in the United States, with the first episode offering surprises for fans, including an unexpected pregnancy, an addiction that becomes uncontrollable, and a reconciliation for one of the couples.

Character faces personal and professional challenges

One of the series' heroines, Jo, played by Camilla Luddington since 2012, is questioning her career after being traumatized by the complicated birth of her twins. Jo nearly lost her life during childbirth but eventually returned to work in the first episode of the 23rd season.

Jo decides to leave her job

However, when a patient's condition deteriorates, Jo becomes overwhelmed by anxiety and announces to Link (Chris Carmack) that she is resigning from her position at the hospital.

Showrunner explains Jo’s future

Following the launch of the 23rd season, showrunner and executive producer Meg Marinis provided insights into Jo's future in the series. Marinis stated that the show will explore what triggers Jo's reactions in upcoming episodes, noting that having come close to death and witnessing others go through similar experiences may be a triggering factor.

Jo’s absence will affect the story

Marinis also mentioned that Jo could be present at the hospital in future episodes but will no longer work at the same pace as before, which will have consequences for the story's continuation. Jo will return in medical attire, though not in episode 2.

Narrative choice highlights character growth

Marinis emphasized that this is a narrative choice to show the real consequences of Jo's experiences and that viewers will see the repercussions of her decision to no longer work, as well as whether she regrets it or is reinforced in her choice.
