The FIA Formula 2 has unveiled its calendar for the 2027 season, which includes several major changes. For the first time, only five of the 14 selected races will be held in Europe, signaling a significant shift in the championship's global strategy. The series will also make its debut in Latin America, with a race scheduled to take place in Mexico alongside the Formula 1 Grand Prix. The announcement was made in Mexico by Bruno Michel, CEO of the FIA Formula 2 and Formula 3 championships. "Adding Mexico to our 2027 Formula 2 calendar will allow the category to reach new audiences and strengthen its position as a global platform for the next generation of F1 talents," Michel said. He also thanked Rafael Villagómez Sr, co-owner of the VAR team, for his essential role in making this possible. The 2027 season will consist of 14 races, following the traditional pattern of starting in Bahrain and ending in Abu Dhabi, assuming no conflicts arise. The inclusion of Mexico marks a significant step in the international expansion of Formula 2, as it will be the category's first appearance in Latin America. This follows the 2026 season, during which Formula 2 had already strengthened its presence in North America by hosting races in Miami and Montreal instead of the originally planned races in the Middle East. Canada will retain its place on the 2027 calendar, while Istanbul will also be added, aligning with the return of the Turkish circuit to the Formula 1 calendar. For the first time in many years, the support series will not be part of the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps, a decision that disappointed many fans of the event. The 2027 season will also see the introduction of a new Formula 2 single-seater, revealed a month earlier. This new generation of car will maintain the main conceptual features of the current model to help reduce costs for teams, while incorporating improvements in aerodynamics, handling, and track performance. Dallara will continue to produce the chassis, and Mecachrome will supply the engine, which will be a 3.4-liter V6 turbo engine producing 620 horsepower at 8,750 rpm and 570 Nm of torque. The engine will run on Aramco 100% sustainable fuel. Visually, the new Formula 2 car will have more significant changes, with redesigned front and rear wings inspired by modern Formula 1 cars. These aerodynamic modifications are not just for appearance; they aim to optimize airflow, allowing drivers to follow other cars more closely at high speeds and promoting overtaking. With the addition of Mexico and Istanbul, the absence of Spa-Francorchamps, the retention of Canada, and the introduction of the new single-seater, the 2027 season will represent a major step in the evolution of Formula 2.
