Parisian comic book festival SoBD launches international rights market to boost foreign comics in France amid funding cuts.
SoBD launches international comic rights market
The SoBD, a Parisian comic book festival, has launched an international comic book rights market on December 4 at the Halle des Blancs Manteaux in the 4th arrondissement of Paris. This initiative aims to facilitate the publication of foreign comics in France and diversify the festival's resources amid reduced cultural funding. The event will bring together holders of comic book rights from Canada, Catalonia, Chile, Denmark, and Greece, as well as organizations that assist in translation and publishing. French publishers and rights buyers can attend the meetings for free, while foreign participants must pay participation fees.Financial challenges for the SoBD festival
The SoBD has been facing financial challenges for several years due to reduced cultural support and decreased resources from collective management organizations. According to Renaud Chavanne, organizer of the SoBD, the fair has been suffering from the effects of reduced financial support for three or four years. Geoffroy Pelletier, director of the Sofia, noted a 30% decrease in the amounts distributed to cultural projects from 2022 to 2025. The 2025 barometer of the Ministry of Culture reported that 39% of festivals surveyed experienced a decrease in departmental aid and 36% a decline in regional support.International participation in the rights market
The International Comic Book Rights Market will allow French publishers to meet directly with foreign professionals to discover their publications and consider their translation or commercialization in France. The geographical location of the fair in Paris should allow for multiple meetings without imposing long travels on French buyers. Canada will be represented by Conundrum Press, an independent publisher specializing in graphic novels. Chile will be represented by Nauta Colecciones, which focuses on the valorization of the national graphic heritage and the history of Chilean comics. Denmark's Danish Comics – Foreign Rights program, promoted by the professional association Danske Tegneserieskabere, will allow the discovery of works offered for international rights sales. Greece will also be represented by an intermediary specializing in comic book rights.Focus on a foreign country each year
The fair will dedicate part of its programming each year to the comics of a foreign country. After Chile in 2025, Luxembourg in 2024, and Spain in 2023, it is Denmark that will be honored this year. A delegation of 27 Danish artists and professionals is expected in Paris. Exhibitions, meetings, round tables, and a specialized bookstore will allow the French public to discover a production still relatively little distributed in the Hexagon. The fair will also welcome nearly 70 exhibitors and about 150 authors and artists. Fabcaro and Nelly Feuerhahn are among the guests of honor of this 16th edition.Emphasis on translation and awards
The international opening of the SoBD is also reflected in a particular attention to the work of translators. The SoBD will host the Prix Sophie Castille, an international award rewarding the translation of a foreign comic book, on Saturday, December 5, alongside the Prix SoBD Neuvième art and Catherine Schoemann, dedicated to the reissue of heritage works.
