OM System has reintroduced the PEN series with the OM System PEN, a compact mirrorless camera tailored for street photography. Designed to be lightweight and portable, the PEN features a 20-megapixel CMOS sensor with a 4/3 format, similar to the company's OM-5 model. Its rangefinder-style design includes settings grouped on the right side of the body, and it comes with a 2.36 million-point electronic viewfinder. The camera is splash-proof when used with the included kit lens, and it includes the BLS-7 battery, which offers up to 400 or 410 shots per charge, depending on usage.
The OM System PEN includes advanced computational photography features such as high-resolution mode, simulated ND filters, focus stacking, HDR, and multiple exposures. It also supports Live Composite, Live Time, and Live Bulb modes, which are useful for long-exposure photography. Additional features include six scene modes and sixteen artistic filters to help users achieve creative effects. This is the first PEN model to include phase detection autofocus with 121 cross-type focus points, enhanced by AI for detecting people and animals. It also offers five-axis image stabilization, rated for 5.5 stops of compensation, helping to reduce blur in low-light or handheld shooting.
The OM System PEN is capable of capturing up to 30 images per second using its electronic shutter, compared to 8 with a mechanical shutter. Users can personalize their photos with customizable color and monochrome profiles to create a unique visual style. The camera records in 4K resolution and includes features like slow/accelerate mode (S&Q) for video, as well as a microphone input for vlogging. However, it lacks a headphone jack. The camera is available in black or silver, offering a sleek and modern look.
Priced at 999 euros or $999.99 / £849 without a lens, or 1099 euros or $1099.99 / £949 with a 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 kit lens, the OM System PEN is targeted at photographers looking for a compact and feature-rich option for street and everyday photography. Pre-orders began on September 9, with the camera expected to be available by the end of October or early November. The new 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 Mark III kit lens was also launched alongside the camera, offering improved performance and compatibility.
