Sony has introduced the FE 400mm F/4.5 GM OSS lens, a new addition to its line of high-end photography lenses. This lens is much lighter than its predecessor, weighing just 994 grams without a tripod collar—compared to the previous 400mm model that weighed nearly three kilograms. The new lens is designed to deliver image quality that meets Sony's G Master (GM) standard, while being more compact and portable. The FE 400mm F/4.5 GM OSS features an advanced optical design with 22 elements arranged in 16 groups. This includes three Super ED (Extra-low Dispersion) lenses and one ED lens, which help reduce chromatic aberration and improve clarity. The lens also includes a circular diaphragm with 11 blades, which is expected to produce a smooth and creamy bokeh effect—ideal for isolating subjects from their backgrounds. The lens is compatible with Sony’s teleconverters, which can extend its reach. However, using the x1.4 or x2 teleconverters reduces the maximum aperture to F/6.3 and F/9, respectively. Designed for sports and wildlife photography, the lens includes two linear XD motors for fast and accurate focusing, supported by AI recognition technology found in Sony’s latest Alpha cameras. This allows for real-time subject tracking, making it suitable for capturing fast-moving subjects, such as birds in flight or athletes during a game. The lens also features four focus locking buttons, a function ring, and a focus range limiter, all housed in a durable, weather-sealed design. The front lens is treated with fluorine to repel dust and moisture, enhancing its usability in challenging environments. Sony claims that the new lens offers superior image quality, a better price point, and a lighter build compared to the Nikon NIKKOR Z 400mm F/4.5 VR S, which currently retails for 3200 euros. The Sony FE 400mm F/4.5 GM OSS will be available starting in September for 2800 euros.
