Sony has introduced the FE 600mm F6.3 GM OSS lens, a new addition to its high-end G Master series of lenses. This lens is designed for professional photographers who require long focal lengths for wildlife, sports, and other distant subjects. It is 30% lighter and 1100 € cheaper than Nikon's Z 600mm F6.3 VR S, which is currently priced at 5800 € and usually sells for around 5000 €. Sony's version weighs 995 grams and is available for 3900 €, making it a more affordable and lighter alternative for photographers looking for a high-performance telephoto lens.
The FE 600mm F6.3 GM OSS features an advanced optical design with 24 elements arranged in 17 groups. This design includes three Super ED (Extra-low Dispersion) lenses and one ED lens, which help reduce chromatic aberrations—color fringing that can occur in images, especially at the edges. The lens also includes a Nano AR II coating, which minimizes reflections and ghost images, improving overall image quality and clarity in challenging lighting conditions.
The lens is compatible with both 1.4x and 2x teleconverters, which allow users to extend the focal length to 840 mm (f/9) and 1200 mm (f/13), respectively. However, the 1200 mm f/13 configuration is less bright than Canon's RF 1200mm F8 L IS USM, which offers a faster f/8 aperture but is significantly more expensive at 20,000 €. Despite this, the Sony lens is equipped with two "XD linear" motors, ensuring it can keep up with the high-speed performance of the Sony Alpha 9 Mark III camera, which can shoot up to 120 frames per second in burst mode and maintain sharp autofocus tracking.
Sony claims the FE 600mm F6.3 GM OSS delivers sharp images from the center to the edges of the frame, even when used at its maximum aperture. This performance is supported by MTF (Modulation Transfer Function) curves, which are technical measurements used to assess lens sharpness and resolution. The lens is positioned as a strong competitor to existing high-end telephoto lenses, offering a compelling combination of performance, weight, and cost for professional and advanced amateur photographers.
