Google has launched a new AI-powered feature in its Google Photos app that lets users turn photos of their outfits into a virtual closet. Inspired by the digital wardrobe from the 1995 movie Clueless, where Cher uses a high-tech system to manage her many outfits, the feature is now available to users in the U.S., Brazil, and India on both iOS and Android devices. The update follows an earlier announcement this year, with Android users gaining access in June and iOS users now joining them. This technology makes it easier for anyone — not just wealthy teenagers — to organize and experiment with their clothing choices digitally. The virtual closet works by using AI to analyze photos of outfits and create a digital copy of the user's wardrobe. From the app, users can sort their items by category, such as tops, bottoms, and accessories, and then mix and match them to create new outfits. Google emphasizes that the data about users' clothing choices is not shared with third parties, such as retailers, ensuring privacy and personal control over the information. This update is part of a broader set of improvements to Google Photos. Among the new features is Gemini Spark, an upgraded tool that allows users to edit and enhance photos with a single prompt. It also includes new markup tools that let users blur sensitive details like license plates, adjust the thickness of lines for custom sketches, and choose from various fonts when adding text to photos. However, Gemini Spark requires a Google AI Pro or Ultra subscription in the U.S. For Android users, additional updates include new photo filters called "Moods," which apply different visual styles to images, such as the look of 35mm film or 2000s digital cameras. These enhancements aim to make photo editing more intuitive and creative, while the virtual closet feature brings a new level of convenience to how users manage and style their clothing digitally.
