Electrification of parking positions

Bordeaux-Mérignac Airport has completed the electrification of 29 parking spots used for passenger flights, allowing planes to connect to electricity while on the ground. This change reduces the need for aircraft to use auxiliary power units, which are small engines that provide power when planes are parked.

Reduction in carbon emissions

The airport estimates that this new system will prevent 4,100 tons of carbon emissions each year starting in 2027. The project also includes 20 new positions operating at 400 Hz and 20 units of Pre-Conditioned Air, which help keep the cabin at a comfortable temperature without using thermal units.

Funding and support

The project, which began in October 2026, was supported by the European Union through the Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Facility (AFIF), which provided 2 million euros in funding. The Bank of Territories also gave a loan of 2.2 million euros to support the initiative.

Renewable energy and regulation

Bordeaux-Mérignac Airport uses 100% renewable electricity, certified through guarantees of origin. The electrification project aligns with the European regulation AFIR, which requires airports to provide electrical power to aircraft when they are parked. This initiative is part of the airport’s broader strategy to eliminate thermal generators on passenger positions.

Future electrification plans

The airport has already electrified nine parking positions, and the new project complements those. While the positions closest to the terminal are already electrified, the ones further away on the parking lot will be electrified by the end of 2029. This effort aims to reduce noise pollution and local emissions from the airport.
