Meta has introduced two new development tools aimed at helping users create AI-generated video games for its Horizon social platform. These tools, named Horizon Create (a mobile app) and Horizon Studio (a browser-based app with more detailed controls), are now available in early access. Interested users can join a waitlist to gain access. Meta hopes to boost engagement on Horizon by allowing games created with these tools to be recommended on Facebook and Instagram, where they can also be played directly within the feed. According to Meta, users will be able to click on a game clip in their feed and join a multiplayer session without needing to download a separate app or leave the platform. The company says that games that are "engaging, stable, culturally relevant, and keep players coming back" will receive more visibility on these platforms. This move comes as Roblox, a similar platform with 123 million daily active users, also makes a significant push into AI-powered game development. Horizon, which originally launched as a virtual reality (VR) app, has faced challenges in gaining widespread use. In early 2022, The Verge reported that it had only reached 300,000 monthly users. However, Meta claims that both Horizon Create and Horizon Studio allow creators to turn any idea into a complete 2D or 3D mobile game. These tools include features such as progression systems, balanced difficulty, art direction, and multiplayer support, which can then be refined to meet Meta’s standards. The introduction of these tools reflects Meta's broader strategy to make Horizon more accessible and engaging for a wider audience. By integrating game creation and sharing directly into its social platforms, Meta hopes to foster a more active and creative community on Horizon, potentially competing with other game development platforms in the growing AI-driven gaming space.
