IMAX, best known for its large-format cinema screens, has expanded its reach into the home entertainment market through a certification called IMAX Enhanced. This certification applies to both movies and home devices, promising a premium viewing experience. Movies with the IMAX Enhanced label have been digitally remastered to improve image quality. They often use a taller 1.90:1 aspect ratio, compared to the standard 2.39:1 ratio used in most films. This format better fits modern 16:9 (or 1.78:1) TVs, reducing the black bars that often appear on the sides of the screen. IMAX Enhanced also features high dynamic range (HDR), a technology that enhances color, contrast, and brightness, making visuals appear more vivid and lifelike. While HDR is available on other platforms and devices, IMAX Enhanced claims to deliver a "theater-quality" digital soundtrack. This requires a compatible audio setup, specifically one that supports DTS:X spatial audio, which creates a more immersive sound experience. IMAX Enhanced content is available on streaming platforms like Disney+ and the Sony Pictures Core app, with Disney+ offering the largest collection. Some 4K Blu-ray discs also include expanded aspect ratios, such as those for The Dune series, Interstellar, and The Odyssey. However, Disney’s physical media releases usually exclude these expanded formats, meaning users must choose between the IMAX Enhanced version on Disney+ or the high-quality 4K Blu-ray. While some TVs and audio systems are certified as IMAX Enhanced, they are not required to enjoy the content. Most modern TVs that support HDR standards like HDR10 and HDR10+ can display IMAX Enhanced content properly. The type of display technology, such as OLED or mini LED, may be more important than the IMAX Enhanced label. Additionally, the expanded aspect ratio on Disney+ can be viewed on devices like an iPhone, and users can disable the IMAX Enhanced sound settings if they don’t have a DTS:X-compatible system.
