The world's largest movie screen is located at the Traumpalast Leonberg cinema complex in Germany’s Baden-Württemberg region, as recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records in 2023. This massive screen measures 127 feet wide and 69 feet tall, covering an area of about 8,770 square feet. While this makes it the largest in terms of surface area, some movie enthusiasts debate whether it offers the "true" IMAX experience, particularly in comparison to screens that use the 70mm film format, which is considered by many to be the gold standard of IMAX technology. IMAX theaters can be divided into two main types: digital and 70mm film. Digital IMAX theaters typically use either dual xenon lamp projectors or more modern laser projection systems and have an aspect ratio of 1.90:1. These are sometimes called "LieMax" by purists, who argue that they don't match the resolution and visual quality of the 70mm film version. In contrast, the 15/70mm film IMAX theaters are known for their superior image quality, with a 1.43:1 aspect ratio that makes them appear squarer and taller than the digital versions. In Melbourne, Australia, an IMAX theater hosts the largest 1.43:1 IMAX screen, measuring approximately 105 feet wide by 75 feet tall. This screen is the largest of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere and is a popular destination for movie lovers seeking the ultimate IMAX experience. In the United States, the AMC theater at Lincoln Square in New York City has a screen with similar dimensions—about 101 feet wide by 75.6 feet tall—making it a top contender for the largest IMAX screen in the country. Other notable contenders include the AMC Metreon 16 in San Francisco, which could also be a strong competitor in the U.S. The tallest IMAX screen in the country is found at Royal Cinemas’ IMAX theater in Pooler, Georgia, with a dual 4K laser projection system that measures 101 feet wide by 76.2 feet tall. However, whether this screen qualifies as a "true" IMAX experience may depend on the type of projection technology used, which could influence its standing among enthusiasts.
