Construction has begun on a road project connecting the towns of Ascain and Saint-Jean-de-Luz in the Basque region of southwestern France. The work, which started on Monday, September 21, involves extending a greenway—a path designed for walking and cycling—along the RD 918 near the Irrintzi farm. The project is expected to take at least ten weeks, with completion anticipated by mid-December 2026, assuming there are no significant weather-related delays, according to the Pyrénées-Atlantiques Department. The main goal is to strengthen the road’s embankment to protect the infrastructure. To achieve this, a structure referred to as a "Berlin wall" will be constructed. This term describes a reinforced barrier used to stabilize slopes and prevent erosion, ensuring the long-term durability of the road section. The project will create 200 meters of greenway, contributing to the full completion of the greenway between Ascain and Saint-Jean-de-Luz. This section of the road is considered a sensitive area due to its geographical challenges, and its development marks the final piece of the greenway network in the region. To accommodate the construction, one of the two lanes on the RD 918 will be closed, requiring drivers to use a permanent detour during the entire duration of the work. Local authorities have urged motorists to plan their trips accordingly, follow temporary road signs, and reduce their speed near the construction zone to ensure safety. The Pyrénées-Atlantiques Department has also emphasized that the project will be closely monitored by the Labourd Departmental Territorial Unit. This unit will provide updates to both drivers and local officials if any changes occur that could affect traffic conditions. The initiative reflects a broader effort to promote low-impact mobility, such as walking and cycling, while maintaining the safety and integrity of the road infrastructure. The temporary disruption is seen as a necessary step to ensure the long-term usability of the route and the surrounding environment.
