A 30-foot (9-meter) mural of Freddie Mercury has been unveiled at Wembley Park to honor what would have been the legendary singer’s 80th birthday. The artwork, titled I'm Mr Mercury, is an anamorphic piece, meaning it only appears as a clear image when viewed from a specific spot about 65 feet (20 meters) away. From other angles, the mural appears as a jumble of colors and lines. Created by street artist Frank Styles, the mural was hand-sprayed in four sections and then combined into one cohesive image across all 58 steps of the Spanish Steps at the site.
Freddie Mercury, born on September 5, 1946, had a strong connection with Wembley. He performed there multiple times with Queen, a rock band he founded. Between 1978 and 1984, Queen played 10 shows at the venue, then known as the Empire Pool. The band also performed at the historic Live Aid concert at Wembley Stadium in July 1985. Queen returned for two sold-out concerts the following summer, marking some of the most iconic moments in rock history.
The mural also reflects aspects of Mercury’s personal life beyond his music career. Koi fish, which are a symbol of his love for Japan and the pond at his London home, appear in the artwork. Winged female figures represent his Virgo zodiac sign, a motif he used in the Queen crest he designed. Lyrics and quotes from Mercury are also featured, running up the steps toward the stadium.
Claudio Giambrone, who commissioned and curated the artwork for Wembley Park, said, "Freddie Mercury's relationship with Wembley goes far beyond a single famous performance. We wanted to create something that gives fans a new place in Wembley where they can come together and remember him." Frank Styles, the artist, added, "As a trained graphic designer himself, Freddie was very aware and precise about the visual feel, and so I have endeavored to follow his ethos in the conscious creation of this mural."
The Spanish Steps connect Wembley Stadium with the OVO Arena, formerly known as the Wembley Arena. The mural is open to the public at any time and will remain on display until December 2026.
